CHIRP UP GAME INSTRUCTIONS
YOUR MISSION
Build a healthy Ecosystem by filling Natural Habitats with Native Species.
You will start by placing any Bird or Habitat Card on your side of the table (“Ecosystem”) and you’ll build by adding cards as follows.
Birds from the same Habitat go in the same row in numerical order, with Habitats Cards (0) fitting next to Bird Cards (1) and (5).
Birds from different Habitats with the same number go in the same column.
You must place cards directly above, below, or next to cards on the table, i.e., not diagonally.
YOU WIN!
A Row with all six (6) cards (i.e., the Habitat and all five (5) Birds) is a “Healthy Habitat”.
The first player to fill two (2) Healthy Habitats wins a Round. The first player to win two (2) Rounds wins the Game.
LET’S PLAY
SET UP
Shuffle the deck and deal six (6) cards to each player face down (your “Hand”).
Place the remaining cards face down on the table (the “Draw Pile”).
Take the top card from the Draw Pile and place it face up to create the “Discard Pile”.
The youngest player goes first, then the play moves clockwise.
YOUR TURN
Begin your turn by drawing one card from the top of the Draw Pile or Discard Pile.
On your turn, you either:
Place a card face up on top of the Discard Pile.
Place a Habitat or Bird card in your Ecosystem.
Use a Special card per the instructions on the card.
On your turn, you must:
Place, use, or discard (“Play”) one (1) card, i.e., you cannot hoard cards or play more than one (1) per turn.
PILES
If you draw the last card from the Discard Pile, replace it with the top card of the Draw Pile.
Specials that have been played go into a Hold Pile, which is separate from the Discard Pile.
When the Draw Pile runs out of cards:
Leave the top card on the Discard Pile in place,
Everyone keeps one (1) card in their Hand and adds the other five (5) to the Discard Pile,
Shuffle the Discard and Hold Piles together, (iv) deal each player five (5) new cards, and (v) resume play.
NOTES
•Your Ecosystem can include only one (1) of each kind of Habitat.
•When an opponent uses a Kleptoparasite to remove a card from your Ecosystem, your other cards stay in place, even if they are not next to any other card.
ABOUT THE HABITATS
•Within each Habitat the larger birds have the higher numbered cards.
•Aquatic includes shoreline and wetlands.
•Shrubbery includes scrub-shrub, grassland and backyards.
•Forest includes open woodlands and dense forests.
PARTY PLAY
•In a four (4) player game, play in teams of two (2) with each team building one (1) Ecosystem.
•For five (5) or six (6) player games, combine two (2) Starter Decks.
•In any multi-player game, any player can play any Special for or against any other player.
Fly Free - More Ways to Play Chirp Up
Chirp Up Solitaire
How To Play Chirp Up Solitaire:
All of the standard rules of Chirp Up apply to this version of the game.
You win by completing two healthy habitats before you go through the deck one tim
Deal out the Chirp Up cards from a single deck. Deal the first card face up, then 5 cards face down, for a total of 6 cards in the hand. Only the top cards are face up. The goal is to create 2 healthy habitats.
Keep dealing cards. Put the 2nd card into the row face up, then continue dealing face down the row. Do until face up in the 6th place.
In this game, you must play any card that is face up, if it can be played. If a peril card is turned face up, you must play it against yourself if it can be played. Ignore cards if not applicable but they may apply later in the game.
Play the cards from the Draw Stack, with 3 cards drawn, and start with the top one if it can be played. You can play the next card if it can be played.
Goal: build 2 healthy habitats before you go through the Draw Stack once. Remember to draw the 3rd card from the Draw Stack each turn to play it. If you can't play it, then draw the next 3rd card.
Chirp Up Solitaire Game Notes
There are a few exceptions to standard rules.
As the Peril cards are turned up, they must be played against you if they can be played.
If a card doesn't apply to the game, then ignore it. It may apply later in the game.
If the Kleptoparasite card is turned over, you must remove the left most bird card in the bottom row of your habitats.
You still need a remedy card to remove a Peril card. When a Global Peril card is turned over, it prevents you from placing more cards in all habitats for 2 rounds. Thus, sort through the Sraw Stack 3 cards at a time, twice, so you miss playing for 2 rounds.
If you turn over a Love Bird card, draw the next 3 cards from the Draw Stack and play 2 of them if you can.
If you turn over a Migration card, remove the top 6 cards from the 6-card section, put them in the hold pile and turn over the next card from the 6-card section.
When going through the remaining card deck, sort through the cards playing the third card each time. Play the face up cards from the 6-card stack from left to right in order. If you can play the 3rd card, keep playing the next face up cards until you must stop.
